Most teams use the previous day of minicamp as a cool down until revving again for training camp. The Arizona Cardinals chose to utilize to make a move.
The Cardinals released veteran cornerback David Amerson, whom the group signed as a free agent last November.
The move comes as a small surprise for a team that will be without All-Pro corner Patrick Peterson for the first six games of the regular season.

Given his expertise, Amerson was anticipated to function as one to temporarily take Peterson’s place alongside free-agent signee Robert Alford, but now the team will look to second-round draft pick Byron Murphy, veteran Tramaine Brock, or maybe talent elsewhere to be a replacement. The Cardinals do have four other corners on the roster, as well.
Amerson’s release might be a sign that Murphy showed improvement throughout organized group activities, per Darren Urban of the group’s official website, allowing Arizona to cut a participant with 61 career starts to his title.
Arizona has yet to declare the corresponding move but it’s worth noting that NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier Thursday that the group would be hosting former Miami Dolphins defensive end Andre Branch.
In his lone season with the Cardinals, Amerson, 27, played in six games — five of which he began — and donated 21 tackles, two pass deflections and an interception. The 2013 second-round pick additionally has made stops with the Redskins and Raiders in his six-year career.
