Sam Warburton: ‘France don’t treat concussion seriously’

Former Wales captain Sam Warburton has predicted on World Rugby to standardise the way concussion is handled.
Warburton praised Wales and England’s treatment of players after suffering blows to the head in games.
Nevertheless, the two-time Irish and British Lions captain asserted the exact standards are not fulfilled in France.
“France do not treat concussion seriously and they’ve had deaths in the previous 12 months,” he informed the Scrum V podcast.
Warburton stated Wales’ choice to eliminate fly-half Rhys Patchell early within their 19-10 defeat by Ireland on 7 September was praiseworthy.

“Wales I believe do it brightly so I can say firsthand these two have things in order – I believe all the House Nations have but I am not sure every other nation has.”
Patchell failed a head injury assessment (HIA) after a heavy crash with Ireland back row CJ Stander. The stand-off is expected to fly to Japan with Wales to take part in the Rugby World Cup and is being monitored.
The player suffered two concussions throughout the 2018-19 season playing Scarlets.
Wales coach Warren Gatland states Wales’ medical team will be consulted Patchell’s previous head injuries and also they will”see how he hires during the next couple of days”.
Warburton stated it was important players do not go back on the field after failing HIA tests.
“There’s something called second-impact syndrome, which is when if you get concussed and you go back on and get the following concussion your chances of a fatality increase hugely,” additional Warburton.
He explained Wales’ movement in keeping Patchell off was”because he has had a concussion – it is not using the World Cup in sight, so it is for the participant’s safety”.
