What’s your group’s playing style this season? Adam Smith tests under the hood utilizing a new selection of advanced stats…
Opta has produced a range of stats that go beyond goals, including departure sequences, progress in possession, rate in pressing and attack against opposition.
We compare each of 20 clubs to show early signs of weaknesses and strengths, as well as striking similarities between teams and select a number of the main stats.
Firstly, let us rattle through the definitions, until we find out the results…
As the graphic below shows, Manchester City are currently excelling across all metrics.
The champions simply lag for’direct rate’ and’direct strikes’, but that is because of their domination in possession.
Pep Guardiola’s side don’t have to bomb ahead together with the ball, on account of their league-topping amounts for’pass sequences’ and’build-up attacks’. From the blocks, their runners burst off the ball to create space, however.
Liverpool path City by the tiniest of margins along with a raft of those metrics – but especially strike at rapid speeds frequently, with fewer passes. Chelsea are less successful although very similar to Liverpool with the item.
Tottenham arsenal and Manchester United have styles comparable with much less emphasis on pressing at the attacking third, but with Liverpool .
While Spurs achieve pass sequences that are patient at a rate rivalled by Leicester, also bettered by Manchester City, arsenal and United focus on dividing in rate.
In fact, West Ham and Crystal Palace have started the season but with fewer attacks after individual exchanges, and consequently fewer departure combinations – that verges towards the’Attack when you can!’ Fashion below.
Everton and Leicester kicked the season off in similar styles, pressing against resistance frequently than any club.
The Toffees are slightly more capable of winning the ball but a lot stable possession is achieved by Leicester.
Both groups look for fast-breaking adjustments and begin passing strings indicating opposing sides sit deeper.
Other teams pushing towards this design: Watford, Southampton and Bournemouth
No fewer than seven groups fit into what could be described as a’bottom-half’ design, with fewer buildup strikes passing sequences, along with a reliance on counter-attacks following winning ownership in the middle next.
Last seasons’best of the rest’, Wolves, fit into this category, however, the negative of Nuno Espirito Santo have confronted a difficult opening program, such as Leicester, Manchester United and Everton.
Other groups that fit in this group include Brighton, Aston Villa, Burnley, Newcastle and Norwich, whereas Sheffield United match those tropes but lack guide speed.
